Weber's Ultimate Grilling: New Flagship Grilling Cookbook

Weber's Ultimate Grilling by Jamie Purviance

I was excited to hear that Weber was putting out a new rather comprehensive grilling cookbook for 2019. It's been about nine years since the company has showcased a flagship cookbook.

I've been writing about grilling and smoking for around fifteen years now and have the good fortune to see a ton of outdoor cooking books. Some of my favorite cookbooks have been under the Weber umbrella, and the newest grilling book is no exception.

Weber's Ultimate Grilling: A Step-by-Step Guide to Barbecue Genius by Jamie Purviance is a very solid book with coverage of almost anything you might want to try on the grill. This includes help sections as well as recipes. For instance, you will find photos and detailed directions on how to pat out good grill burgers (yes - there are better ways to make beef patties) and a section also with photos that help in mastering grilled pizza which is a challenge for many home grillers.

There are charts for various meats with cooking times over heat methods such as direct and indirect which are also covered. All types of dishes are included from starters to desserts with over 100 recipes which are easy to follow.

The organization on the cookbook is good, and the cookbook includes an index

This would an excellent grilling cookbook for any home barbecue beginner or even a seasoned griller. It would also make a great gift which is what I look for. It's fun to find a stand out cookbook to give to family and friends for special occasions or "just because."

*I reviewed an uncorrected, advance copy which is not complete and is not printed in color.

Weber's Smoke Book - Ready to Make the Leap to Low and Slow?

Weber Smoking Cookbook

Here's the book I wish I'd had when I was learning how to smoke - Weber's Smoke Book: A Guide to Smoke Cooking for Everyone and Every Grill by Jamie Purviance.

Kim got in touch to let me know this new Weber outdoor cookbook was out and to see if I'd like to review it. Even though I'm solid on smokers, I always enjoy seeing the new grilling and smoking books on the market. I especially enjoy the Weber books, since I've loved every one so far and often end up buying copies for holiday gifts for friends and family.

The nice thing about the Weber line of cookbooks is that they are combination how-to and recipe books. Weber's Smoke is no exception. You get detailed directions with photos like below.

Easy How To Directions for All Smoker Types and Even Gas Grills

If you're familiar with smokers, you'll know this is the Weber Smokey Mountain (a bullet water smoker). If you have another kind of smoker or even want to smoke on any kind of gas grill, there are similar guides at the front of the book. So, this really is an outdoor cookbook for anyone who wants to smoke and not just for those with Weber Bullets (although I recommend Weber's and have both the 18 and 22 inch models - but also some other smoker types as well).

Outdoor smoking is low and slow versus grilling which is high heat and fast. You want to do your burgers and steaks quick (although you can smoke them), but larger cuts of meats like pork shoulders, ribs, and turkey need more time and lower temperatures. You learn how to do these classic smoker foods in Weber's Smoke and also Beer Can Chicken which is a family favorite around here.

Yes. The Neighbors Do Look When We Do This.

See. There she sits. Add the rub recipe from the book and the mesquite chips as suggested, and you have one fine bird for dinner.

If you do smoke already, you'll still find plenty of ideas and recipes in this smoker cookbook to keep you busy for quite a long time. You have red meats, poultry, and pork which are common on the smoker but also seafood and vegetables.

The guys are wanting me to try out the shrimp tacos. They were down in Florida recently and got excited about seafood tacos. So, that's a project coming up soon, and I have all the directions right at my fingertips.

The younger son is hoping I don't do the smoked artichokes, but I know I'd love them. He just thinks artichokes are too much work (for a small bite) and not all that yummy. Maybe he'll grow into them especially if he tries smoked ones.

Also on my bucket list is the jerky. I've been planning to make jerky for years now, but I just never get around to it. That may be because I can buy super jerky from Janie at House of Jerky. Still, I want to, at least once, turn out a big batch of home smoked jerky. The Peppery Beef Jerky looks like just the ticket. Maybe I can make my jerky to celebrate finishing up the semester.

Sitting Here Wanting Some Homemade Beef Jerky

On second thought, I may have to fire up the smoker and make that jerky sooner. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it and looking at the picture.

Smoked Rosemary Pork Rib Roast from Weber's Smoke Cookbook

This latest Weber cookbook is definately a thumbs up. It has easy and clear directions. It's perfect for Weber grillers but also for those who smoke with other brands and types of smokers (or even grills).

I'm sure you'll love the smoked spiced nuts in this cookbook, the slow smoked trout, and the pork rib roast you see above. That's just a few. Weber's Smoke spans from appetizers to Garlic Spoon Bread.

If you're looking for a solid and fun smoking book, this is a good one.

Now - off to fire up the smoker.

New Weber Grilling Book Review - Weber's Time to Grill - Get in. Get out. Get Grilling.

Weber's Time to Grill by Jamie Purvance

I've been having a blast with the new Weber grilling cookbook - Time to Grill: Get In. Get Out. Get Grilling by Jamie Purvance. This grilling book has more of a gourmet slant, but it's easy gourmet and fine for all level of grillers. I find that many of the fancier grilling books are too complicated or time consuming for the average home griller. Time to Grill is an exception. The recipes are creative and taste great but are quick and easy with excellent directions.

Things You Need to Know to Get Started

Time to Grill is more than a book of grill recipes. It's packed full of helpful information like the prep guides. If you know how to prep shrimp, then it's simple. If you don't, then you may not have a clue where to start. In this book, you get step by step instructions along with excellent photos. This makes the basic tasks understandable and simple. It's a shame to skip over great and easy grilled foods just because you don't know how to get it ready to go on the grill.

Haven't Tried Grilling Zucchini? You're Missing Out.

Time to Grill has sections for everything from meat and vegetables to eggs and desserts. There are a lot of chicken recipes which I like, because chicken is less expensive usually and healthy. With a simple marinade made in your kitchen, you have some rocking Easy Rosemary Roasted Chicken.

Then there are unique recipes like the zucchini stuffed with sausage. We always have a bumper crop of zucchini her in North Carolina, and I'm always looking for new ways to cook or grill zucchini.

French Toast on the Grill

Speaking of unique, then perhaps you'd enjoy making French toast on the grill. Yes. This book shows you how to do that, and it's simple. When we vacation, we like to rent houses through Vacation Rentals by Owners. I always double check that the homes have grills, and then we do almost all our meals outside for the whole week. I'll have to try out one of the French Toast recipes next month when we go to Emerald Isle.

One of Our Favorite Grilled Appetizers

The appetizer section is one of my favorites in Time to Grill. I like to put something on that's quick while I'm working on a grilled meal. We've been doing grilled nachos for years. They aren't as jazzed up as the recipe you see above, but they are easy to put together and done in literally minutes or less.

I've never bought a Weber grilling book that I've not loved. In fact, I often buy Weber grill cookbooks for gifts. I usually start off with a basic one like grilling on charcoal for someone with a charcoal grill. Time to Grill will make a good follow up gift for those who want to go beyond the classic hot dogs, burgers, and steaks.

You can learn more about Time to Grill and the chef - Jamie Purviance at the Time to Grill web site. You get a lot of extra information including some of the recipes to try out.

I did get a copy of the grilling book to review, but I always give honest reviews. I wasn't so sure that a Weber book with the gourmet slant would be solid for all readers, but I give it the thumbs up for all levels of grillers. The food is fancy (as we'd say here), but it's easy to find the ingredients and make the recipes. These don't take all day, and you don't have to babysit the grill every second to turn out fine grill dining. You can impress your family and friends without breaking a sweat (other than from the heat of the grill).
